The puma and jaguarundi are closely related and have an older association with the cheetah, which diverged from the common ancestor about 8.25 million years ago. The puma and jauguarundi are American cats and as most people know cheetahs are from Africa. However, fossils recovered in North America indicate that cheetahs lived on this continent 2-3 million years ago.
